June 15th--

Phil McMullin spoke about the current trends in the stock market and compared it to historical data and graphs of predictable future trends.  Phil had graphs and charts and all the graphs and charts started in the lower left and went to the upper right. And the charts and graphs clearly showed that all bad downturns in the stock market and the economy will all eventually pass. The strategy is simply to outlive them!

Also, Jonathan Fritz joined us for lunch and to hear what Phil had to say. Jonathan is a recent college graduate with  a major in finance.

It's a sad day. Our friend and companion in rotary has issued a letter of resignation to the club. Al Dapkus resigned today stating that he loves the club and will miss us all but has taken a new job down near Columbus. Al, Rasa and Babora will be missed, too. Al served as our club Vocational Director for the past three years. We hope that Al will stay with the Rotary because his leadership and work ethics are the foundation of Rotary and people like him are valued. Thank you Al for your continued "Service Above Self". We'll miss you.

May 18, 2009 - The YMCA has been around in Fayette County for over 29 years. Pam Young and Catherine Sanderson presented a summary of activities that our young men and women can participate in at their YMCA.

Well, Phil McMullin was called away unexpectedly, so the Club unexpectedly called upon Parks Redwine for a program. Parks spoke about his recent trip to the great North West where he was the judge for a local wine tasting contest. An interesting side note is that Parks began his wine career writing the the Atlanta Journal and Constitution back in the 1970s under the alias (nom de plume) Richard P. McKenzie.  This was done partly because no one would believe his real name was Redwine and partly to avoid angry crowds.

May 4, 2009-

TODAY’S SPEAKER was Georgia House Representative Matt Ramsey. Matt, who has a ‘day job’ with the law firm of Warner, Hooper & Ramsey, P.C. in Peachtree City, gave the Club an update on the last legislative session.

The big area this year was budget cuts!  In so doing, the Legislature had to set their priorities. Education and Public Safety and health care for the indigent were three that received the least amount of cuts.

It the area of Education the state temporarily suspended some unfunded mandates for two years so that school systems would be able to use available money.  But they voted to spend some more money to lure graduates to pursue math and science teaching since the state has a shortage of such teachers.

As to transportation, the state reorganized the DOT.

And in the area of Ethics, the state passed a law to weed out legislators who do not pay their income taxes.

April 20, 2009-  CLUB ASSEMBLY

President Scott Williamson lead a lively discussion of recent Club events and a preview of coming events in the new Rotary Year. Membership was discussed and it was noted that we are losing ground in this arena. After giving a nod to the current economic collapse, Presdent Scott said must all work on getting new members in the new year. Darryl Cutts won the lottery and got to cut the losing card.

THIS JUST IN-   Jekyll Island, GA April 24, 2009. Good evening Mr. and Mrs. America and all the ships at sea. Representatives from the Rotary Club of Fayetteville are having a grand time at the District 6900 Convention in Jekyll.  Reports from Tony Fritz, President Elect, are that the group went on an ocean going boat cruise Thursday night and on Friday they are headed for the Rotary Roundup. Everyone is wearing their Cowboy gear and Tony promises to lasso the District Governor off the podium. (editors comment.)

Saturday night will see the Swingin Medallions hit the stage (but not each other) as they will enthrall the Convention with their raucous brand of good time rock and roll!

Attendees from our Club are  Hector (Foundation Director) and Carol (Past President) Colon, Scott (President) and Amy Williamson, Tony (Vice President and President Elect) and Alice Fritz.  Those not in attendance will be required to write an essay on why they should be excused from all the fun!

April 20, 2009-

Congressman Lynn Westmoreland spoke to our Club today. He addressed questions mostly about the current economic crisis. He does see some light at the end of the tunnel, but it presently is only a dim light (editor's comment.)

Lynn is a resident of Coweta County, Georgia and is in his third term as our Congressional Representative.

April 13, 2009-

Dr. Bryan Kaiser spoke today about his charitable organization known as God's Eyes. This company makes eyeglasses free of charge for poor people in Haiti, Peru, and Honduras. As a Christian based organization, its mission is to help alleviate the burden of an estimated 100,000,000 people who need vision correction but cannot afford it. For more information see www.GodsEyes.biz.

Remember this week is Holy Week in the Christian world. And the first day of Passover is this week also.
